Grace Cathedral is a marvelous, majestic space set on opulent Nob Hill. With soaring arches, colorful stained glass, and two labyrinths, it is a wonderful oasis from the hustle and bustle of the city. The city's only Gothic church, Grace Cathedral was built on the side of the Charles Crockett mansion. It took over 50 years to build and is now considered to be San Francisco's house of worship for the elite. Stained glass windows pay homage to men like Albert Einstein, Robert Frost and Thurgood Marshall, and the indoor and outdoor labyrinths encourage participation in the ritual of meditative walking.
The church boasts 3 organs, and the concerts are nothing short of spectacular. Although officially the seat of the Episcopal Church in San Francisco, services are fairly ecumenical and all are welcomed to attend. An interesting, and sobering, feature of the church is the AIDS Interfaith Chapel, which contains a sculpture by the late artist Keith Haring and panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
