Haight-Ashbury San Francisco
This delightful Victorian district of San Francisco gained international fame in the 60's as the birthplace of the "sex, drugs and rock and roll" counter-culture and anti-war movement. Many of the most famous names in American music from that era were either from Haight-Ashbury, or took up residence there during the famous "Summer of Love".
Those who visit "the Haight" today hoping to find a land where time has stood still and hippies still live in communes will be disappointed. But the nostalgic and the student of modern history will still find plenty of interest here. Janis Joplin's old house is here, as is the home of the legendary group, the Grateful Dead. Even if you have no interest in Classic Rock and the movement that shaped a nation, you will enjoy the views of the city from Buena Vista Park, and the architectural gems that you will find along the streets of this historic neighborhood.
