Japanese Tea Garden San Francisco
When the Mid-Winter Exhibition of 1894 was held in 1894, a Japanese "village" was constructed as a part of the fair. The centerpiece of the village was the authentic Japanese teahouse. Today, the teahouse is still open and the 4 acres which surround it have been transformed into a serene garden complete with waterfalls that flow into koi-filled ponds. Bridges made from stone and wood cross the ponds and the gently flowing streams leading you from one perfectly landscaped area to the next.
Japanese sculptures, bonsai trees, and miniature pagodas accent the landscape. Spring is the best time to visit, when the Cherry Blossoms are in full glory. The centerpiece of the garden is the lovely teahouse. You can still purchase a cup of tea (or a soft drink, if you prefer). Drinks are served with complimentary cookies and rice crackers. The waitresses wear authentic kimonos to complete the atmosphere.
