San Francisco Gay Clubs
There are gay bars everywhere in San Francisco. So many, in fact, that we will list those that cater to ladies in a
separate place. Clubs are divided here by district and are listed in no particular order.
Since the
Castro District is the epicenter of gay life in San Francisco, it stands to reason that there is a wide variety of places to quench your thirst in this neighborhood. The Whiskey Lounge offers leather armchairs and quiet conversation. San Francisco Badlands is high tech and attracts a younger, white crowd; while the Pendulum is the only bar in the city geared toward African American men - or those who want to meet them. Twin Peaks seems to lean toward an older clientele. The Pilsner Inn is rapidly becoming one of the most popular spots in the neighborhood. Harvey's continues to be a comfortable meeting spot, and Martuni's is a piano bar with a quirky sense of humor. Speaking of music and a sense of humor, the Mint features gay karaoke. With over 3,000 songs to choose from you can sing the night away.
30 years ago South of Market was the home of a lot of leather and bathhouses. The area has matured with the times, but you will find most of the clubs here have a little more attitude than those in Castro. My Place has been around for a long time. Recently given a face lift, it still feels a little wicked - in a good way. Powerhouse is the place for serious cruising. The Lone Star Saloon caters to bears and those that love them, and the Loading Dock has never given up on Leather.
The Polk is another district with a long history, and honestly it has seen better times. Today you will find a younger crowd here at places like N Touch, which has a predominantly Asian crowd. Anything goes at Divas, where the first floor shows keep the crowds coming back night after night. Live performance is also available at Kimo's - generally music from local alternative bands. Cinch Saloon has been around for 30 years, and has a fairly eclectic crowd.
Other hotspots around the city include Esta Noche (Latino), Ginger's Trois and Pow.
